Day 6 - Fromista to Sahagun

A relatively easy day today with only 36 miles and 975 ft of climb. First stop was Revenga de Campos where Derek posed by this dodgy statue of a pilgrim.

Then onwards to Carrion de Los Condes which is quite a large town with lots of fine buildings. Had a beer here and Derek bought various personal hygiene products (and chocolate!).

We are on the Meseta - the high plateau between the mountain ranges of Northern Spain. It is “big sky country” with long vistas and small villages with huge churches which served the tens of thousands of pilgrim in the Middle Ages that passed this way to Santiago. Only 463 km to go - but some big climbs in the way. The straight roads and paths seem endless.

Derek took this picture of huge storks riding a thermal and, presumably, looking for prey. It was quite spectacular. This picture doesn’t really do justice to how big these birds were

Stopped for lunch at the tiny village of Cervantes de la cueza. It was at the end of. Seemingly endless chalk track which had run, straight as an arrow, with no relief  for 10 miles. On this part Derek questioned my navigation! Outrageous! However, in spite of being tiny it had a great bar where we had lunch of a chorizo sandwich each.

Arrived in Sagahun hot and sweaty. Hotel is great with a nice restaurant. Showered, washed our cycling clothes, and I had a G&T you could swim in! Perfect! Now out in town for a few drinks before dinner. Another good day - and Leon tomorrow!

Our hotel for the night and the best G& T ever!
