Day 5 - Burgos to Fromista

Today’s blog is in two parts - a description of last nights fun in Burgos and today’s adventure.

Burgos night out. We met with our new friend Christian and his crazy cousins. The evening was fantastic with introductions to special Burgos Tapas and lots of drinks. The street we started on was filled with tapas bars. We were intoduced to the local vermouth based drink. Later we went to a restaurant where Derek foolishly ordered a burger. More tapas were ordered and he was full by the time his order arrived. As we were guests he felt compelled to eat it! It ended very late with 12 yr old Macallan’s.

Up early again this morning and a very fine day in prospect. Weather perfect.  Spent a little time visiting some of the dozens of statues that decorate this lovely city.

The route for the day was quite long and had plenty of hills. The total climb wasn’t too bad.

First part of the day, through Tardajos, Hornillos del Camino to Hontenas  was spent on classic Camino tracks amongst the fields. We stopped for Coffee/drinks/food stops at each. We met a group of three foot pilgrims, one English, who was very pleased to meet her first English pilgrim since starting the Camino. The other ladies were German and Belgian.

We passed a very small church that was open (this is unusual). Inside a lady was playing a violin on her knee and singing. It was very atmospheric and a little spooky.

After Hontenas we were on quiet country lanes passing through the arch of the ruined Monesterio de San Anton to Castrojerez which is at the foot of a huge hill with a castle on top.

We had beer and ice creams at a bar by the big church and set off for the final stage. The wind had picked up to very strong and in our faces and this made the last 20 miles tortuous. We made it very tired into Fromista. We are in a nice, small, hotel for the night. We showered and visited the lovely 11th century, Romanesque church of San Martin (picture from the internet as I left my phone in our room,). We ate a huge dinner with wine and finished with a couple of Patxarans each. Into bed. Good day in the main.
